Dear Professor Luo Wen,
I would like to thank you and the organizing committee, the School of Nuclear Science and Technology and especially Professor President Xiao Detao, and the University of South China and especially Professor Chairman Wang Hanqing for organizing a very successful International Workshop dedicated to the exciting new area of research: “Laser-based Radiation Source and Its Frontier Application”. I would like to thank you for inviting me to present the work of ELI-NP on QED experiments with 10PW lasers and for your very warm welcome.
The scientific content of the presentations was outstanding. The presentations showed the great interest both in China and the World in developing new, very bright sources of Gamma Rays, Positrons, Electrons, Protons and Ions using the new technologies provided by extremely High Power Lasers of Petawatt and 10 Petawatt class. Developing these sources we will discover ground-breaking new science in Nuclear Physics and Quantum Electrodynamics other new areas which we may not even perceive at the moment. We will also develop new frontier applications based on these new Radiation Sources, for example radiation hardening of electronic-devices used on satellites, ultrafast imaging through thick containers or cancer radio-therapy with proton beams. The Friday sessions on June 17that the USC campus and group discussions on Saturday June 18thwere so well organized that they created an excellent scientific environment in which I had ample opportunity to discuss with many young Chinese scientists on their work and to brainstorm with them on new research ideas and potential collaborations to achieve them.
I enjoyed very much my visit at the University of South China campus, the warm welcoming addresses by Professor Chairman Wang Hanqing and Professor President Xiao Detao, the conference room and presentation facilities, the lovely lotus flowers which just opened their petals in the ponds on the campus ground, the exquisite Chinese cuisine and the majesty of the Hengshan mountain with its inspiration to harmony with nature. I want to congratulate you for the excellent organization of this three-day International Workshop. I believe the workshop has enhanced our understanding of the science and technology of the new intense radiation sources and their frontier applications and will help us achieve this very challenging and also exciting goal.
Best wishes,
Professor Turcu Edmond,
